was the reverend jeremiah wright. mike emanuel is live in washington. reverand wright became a controversial figure during the 2008 campaign. what did then senator obama say about him in that summer of 2007? >> reporter: he made reference to the trinity church of christ saying that's where he met reverend wright and introduced him to a man named jesus christ and mr. obama praised his long-time pastor. >> i have got to give a special shoutout to my pastor, the guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me. he's a friend, and a great leader. so please, everybody, give an extraordinary welcome to my pastor dr. jeremiah wright, the united church of christ. where's he at. there he is. that's him. that's him right there. [applause] >> reporter: earlier in 2007 reverend wright had become a controversial figure and political problem but clearly in front of that audience mr. obama felt comfortable praising his pastor. he compared the response to katrina to the 9/11 attacks and florida. bill: what are they saying about the video surfacing now? >> reporter: the obama campaign says
pastor to jeremiah wright. alison burns is live in washington, d.c. to tell us how an old video is surfacing before the first debate. >> reporter: dave, the romney campaign insists it had nothing to do with releasing this video but conservative talk show hosts are making a very big deal about it, showing it -- saying it shows president obama engaged in a divisive class warfare. it's from a 2007 speech at an historicry black speech and in it, he praises jeremiah wright who he has denounce -- denounced and the victims did not get the help they needed in hurricane katrina. >> where is new orleans now? >> reporter: the obama campaign says release the video is a transparent attempt to detract from mitt romney attacking those americans who don't pay taxes. president obama took a break and visited hoover dam yesterday. back to you. >> thank you. there will be events in the bay area at democratic headquarters in antioch and the sonoma county republican party and the tea party express will be holding events as well. in san francisco a group called technology for obama will hold a debate
consider how much focus was placed on reverend jeremiah wright four years ago. i've been a bit surprised the press has been hesitant to talk about things like proxy baptisms. as you know, mitt romney's father-in-law, ann romney's father was a devout atheist. after his death, mitt romney himself performed the posthumous baptism making him a mormon. we've heard a lot about this in the past year. one mormon church baptized anne frank despite the church's promise to not proxy baptize holocaust victims. are you a bit surprised things like that haven't gotten more scrutiny in the press given the attention that was paid to jeremiah wright a few years ago? >> i think back in february, i think it was, there was kind of a lot of scrutiny on proxy baptisms because it came out that like you said, holocaust victims had been getting baptized. and i think that there was even a case where -- i can't remember -- somebody was baptized -- one prominent figure was baptized who wasn't even dead it turned out. proxy baptism for someone
his former pastor, the reverend jeremiah wright. did it make you feel squeamish? what did you think when all of a sudden we're hearing about reverend wright? >> no. look. that's an issue that was litigated and talked about very specifically for a good period of time during the '08 cycle. so i think the american people have made up their minds of who president obama is, what kind of ideas he has about what our country is and where he wants to take it. so i don't think that people will want to relitigate that. the notion that mitt romney's campaign had nothing to do with this i find lacking credibility. when you consider the closeness that matt drudge has to the romney campaign, it's hard to imagine a scenario where there was not some sort of conversation or collusion or even the handoff of the video which is five years old to matt drudge knowing that many people in the media would be led around by matt drudge and cover something they'd already covered five years ago. >> just to be precise, the daily caller website is the one that posted the video, that's tucker carlson's website. it
of radicalism in his speech about jeremiah wright. if you look carefully at that speech. it is different than martin luther king jr.'s take on rice in america. barack obama never mentions abraham lincoln and never created all men -- all men are created equal. those are absent from the speech. >> it is a deplate point and you look at the great society now people look at welfare and entitlement system and how had the great society fail . and failed to provide the safety net and are we in a nation where we are experience 50-50 environment. >> that's right. >> half of the country is supporting the other half of the country. is that who we want to be? >> liberalism had an impatience and hostility to the american congressional system, the olderaxoms and principles of the american public. that is a polar working its way out. we are seeing living hosstillity with the constitution and still the legal constitution. it is hard to bridge a gap that is a century old and has been certainly for the past generation deepening. >> which way are we going. i think conservatives is the horse to bet on in the long
school. later if you look at jeremiah wright, there are common themes running through all of these guys. then i just take the ideology of the father and i compare it with the actions of the son. and i say, look, it's like a detective story. does the jigsaw fit? and it turns out that if you look at obama's actions, even now in the middle east, it looks like what he's trying to do is scale back american power, and allow indigenous influence within the region to gain power. >> you draw a lot of parallels with yourself, and obama. i want to watch a little bit about that and i wonder why. >> we were both born in the same year, which is 1961. we both went to an ivy league school. in his case columbia, later harvard. in my case dartmouth. we got our bachelor's degree, we graduated the same year, '83. we were married in the same year, 1992. we both have a kind of mixed race background. >> almost like you have some sort of kinship with the president. why did you do that? >> well, if i look at other presidents they're so remote from my own life. but with obama, i think a part of what makes him in
